At a glance

The short version. The full policy below is what applies.

  • Keep everything appropriate for a learning environment that includes children.
  • Only upload material you own or have the right to use; credit sources where required.
  • Tutors are responsible for the accuracy of course content they publish, including AI drafts.
  • Report anything that looks wrong with the in-app report button - we review every report.
  • Repeated or serious breaches lead to content removal and account action.

These Content & Community Guidelines set the standard for everything created, uploaded or shared on Tutorio: courses, questions, mark schemes, notes, drawings, class notices, feedback, reports, names and avatars. They apply to learners, tutors and organisations and form part of our Terms of Service and Acceptable Use Policy.

Types of content on Tutorio

  • Tutorio content - courses, topics, questions and explanations we create or license, aligned to qualifications and exam boards.
  • Tutor content - courses, questions, lesson material, assignments, reviews and feedback created by tutors and organisations, with or without AI assistance.
  • Learner content - answers, drawings on the annotation layer, notes, saved items, display names and avatars.
  • Third-party content - embedded videos, images from licensed libraries and links to external resources.

Our standards

Appropriate for learners

Tutorio is used by children. Content must not be sexual, pornographic or sexually suggestive; must not depict or glorify violence, self-harm, suicide, eating disorders or dangerous challenges; must not promote drugs, weapons or criminal activity; and must not be gratuitously frightening or distressing. Sensitive topics that form a legitimate part of a curriculum (for example, in history, biology, PSHE or literature) may be covered in an age-appropriate and educational way.

Respectful

No hate speech, harassment, bullying, threats or demeaning content about any person or group, including on the basis of race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender reassignment, disability, age or any other protected characteristic. No content that reveals another person's private information.

Honest and accurate

Course content should be accurate, current with the specification it claims to follow, and clearly labelled as to level and board. Do not misrepresent content as official exam board material unless it is, and do not claim qualifications or affiliations you do not have. Tutors must review AI-drafted content and AI-generated marking before publishing it to learners, and correct errors that learners report.

Lawful and original

Only upload material you own or are licensed to use. Respect copyright, including in past paper questions, textbook extracts, images and video; fair dealing for education is narrow and varies by setting. Credit sources where your licence requires it. Do not upload content that infringes trade marks, breaches confidence, is defamatory or breaks any other law.

Safe

Do not include links to malware, phishing or scams, or content designed to extract personal information from learners. Do not use content to contact learners outside the Service in breach of the Safeguarding Policy.

Names and avatars

Display names and avatars must not be offensive, impersonate others, include personal contact details or be designed to disrupt a class. Tutors and organisations may require learners to use real names in their classes.

Live lessons and class spaces

Answers, drawings and messages in a live lesson are visible to the tutor and may be shown to the class. Keep them on task and respectful. Tutors may remove disruptive content or learners from a live lesson at any time. Screen-recording or sharing other participants' work outside the class is not allowed.

AI-generated content

AI can draft course material, mark answers and generate feedback and explanations. Content produced with AI is held to the same standards as any other content, and the tutor who publishes it is responsible for it. Learners should treat Rio's explanations as study help, not authority, and check anything that matters against their course material or tutor. See the AI Transparency Statement.

Third-party content and licences

Embedded YouTube videos are subject to YouTube's terms. Images from our licensed libraries may only be used within Tutorio. Tutors who bring in exam board material or publisher content must hold the appropriate licence for their setting (for example, a school's CLA licence) and comply with its conditions.

Reporting content

Every question, course and piece of content has a Report option. Tell us what is wrong - inaccurate, inappropriate, infringing or something else - and we will review it. You can also email [email protected]. Reports are confidential. For copyright complaints please include the work concerned, where it appears on Tutorio, your contact details and a statement that you own or represent the rights.

How we moderate

  • Automated checks flag likely problems in uploads and AI output before they reach learners.
  • Our team reviews reports, normally within two working days and immediately for safety issues.
  • Depending on seriousness we may correct, label, hide or remove content, and may warn, restrict, suspend or terminate the account responsible.
  • Where content is removed we tell the author why and how to appeal, unless doing so would put someone at risk or is prohibited by law.
  • Organisations are told about action affecting their staff or learners.

Appeals

If you think we got a decision wrong, reply to the notice or email [email protected] within 30 days. A different member of the team will review it and respond.

Changes

We refine these guidelines as the community grows. Every version is recorded in the history below.
